Animal Stories! Petting them, running from them, watching them, or eating them, everyone has a story about the other creatures we share this world with. Show up at Voodoo on Wednesday, July 25th at 8 pm and tell one of yours, or listen to others. We'll have a barking good time!

First we had drinks, and then...

Another evening of storytelling at Voodoo. I had thought that the feature article in the Charleston City Paper http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/charleston/voodoo-hosts-local-storytellers-at-a-moth-style-event/Content?oid=4097258 and the many posters that I put up would really bring in a crowd, but possibly the professional shot of my ugly mug in the article scared people away. I got a little worried when it was 8:30 and there was ONE person, the delightful Lynne from Summerville, in the joint besides DJ Matt Blaster and myself for the event. Doing the one story that I was prepared to tell and then pulling another two out of my patootie almost left me too wiped out to do anything but smoke cigarettes on the back porch and sop up Holy City and Old Crow. Luckily, a bunch of folks showed up and we had a total of twelve storytellers, and the stories were all pretty funny. Erin's story about her brother's rat dread tail was hilarious. Thanks to everyone that showed up to tell or listen. More tale spinning to come.

Thanks to everyone that turned out on Wednesday at Voodoo for the inaugural Charleston Tell! I was floored by the quality of the stories presented, and by the amount of booze consumed. I have a feeling that this event is going to get bigger and better as time goes on. Next month, on Wednesday, June 28th, the topic will be First we had drinks, and then... A slam dunk category for both patrons of Voodoo, and Charleston in general I'd say. I hope to see you there! John

Story Telling in Charleston

Since we live in the Information Age, surrounded by ever more sophisticated and dehumanizing pieces of technology, wouldn't it be fun to transmit your thoughts, feelings, and experiences to others using...you know...just your mouth? Storytelling is the oldest art form known to man, and there are some people here in Charleston that want to keep it going.

Charleston Tell is an opportunity for folks in the Charleston area to tell their true stories, and for their friends, neighbors, and complete strangers to hear those stories...in a cool bar. If you are familiar with This American Life, The Moth,  or if you have actually spent time in a bar, then you know that storytelling isn't just for kids anymore!

Charleston Tell is a monthly event where storytellers relate a true experience, based on a common theme, without notes or props. Actors, comedians, and just regular old folks all get a chance to entertain and edify a crowd at the Voodoo Lounge over Mai Tais and micro-brews, and it doesn't cost a dime.

The inaugural Charleston Tell will be on Wednesday, May 23rd, at 8PM. The theme will be Beginner's Luck: Getting things right the very first time. Stories should be under 8 minutes in length, but there will be a 2 minute grace period at which point the MC will make you stop. The first ten storytellers to write to charlestontell@gmail.com  will be on the program. Please include the title of your story. This is an over 21 event, so adult themes and language are acceptable, within reason. The order of storytellers will be drawn out of a hat as the event progresses. There will be a microphone and a PA, and we will be recording the stories and posting the best ones on a  podcast here or on another online venue.

Whether you are listening to, or telling an incredible story, we hope to see you there!
